01 · Attention
Not absent. Harder to steer.
ADHD is not a shortage of attention. It is a regulation problem: choosing where attention goes, holding it there, and moving it when the goal changes.

01 · Attention
ADHD is not a shortage of attention. It is a regulation problem: choosing where attention goes, holding it there, and moving it when the goal changes.
02 · The conductor
Working memory, inhibition, prioritising and sensing time rely on coordinated front-of-brain networks. In ADHD, some demanding tasks recruit these systems less consistently on average.
03 · Inner thought
The Default Mode Network supports memory, imagination and self-directed thought. ADHD research often finds weaker separation between it and task-focused networks—not a DMN that is simply ‘always on.’
04 · Dopamine
Dopamine helps the brain learn what matters, anticipate reward, mobilise effort and update behaviour. ADHD is linked to altered dopamine signalling, but there is no universal ‘low dopamine tank.’
05 · The spark
Novelty, urgency, personal interest and immediate reward can increase salience or arousal. For some people with ADHD, that temporarily makes it much easier to recruit task networks.

06 · Compare patterns
People without ADHD often show more consistent task-network engagement and recovery from distraction on average. ADHD patterns tend to be more variable—not inferior, and never identical from person to person.

Each layer is part of a system. No single region explains ADHD on its own.
Medication laboratory
Different medicines alter catecholamine signalling in different ways. Response, dose and side effects vary; treatment needs a qualified prescriber.
Stimulant · primary example
Blocks dopamine and norepinephrine transporters, so more of both signals remain available between neurons.
Vyvanse and Adderall are not generally marketed or available through standard Indian pharmacies. Availability and regulation can change; check with an India-licensed psychiatrist or pharmacist.

It means attention is harder to direct and regulate consistently.
Executive control is a brain function, not a moral score.
The stronger finding is less reliable separation from task networks.
Dopamine regulation is involved, but no single deficit explains every person.
From insight to action
These are supportive patterns, not treatment instructions.
Pair the next small action with visible progress or quick feedback.
Use a countdown, external cue or short work window instead of relying on felt time.
Define the first physical action—not the whole project.
Change location, format or challenge while keeping the goal stable.
The takeaway
Understanding the mechanism replaces blame with better questions: what makes this task easier to start, clearer to hold, or more rewarding to finish?
